Yes we are! It is that time of year again and the PIHA Playoffs are right around the corner. This year looks to be a wide open race as several teams have a legitimate shot at the Founders Cup. The league’s ‘Second Season’ begins this weekend as the Eastern Conference will determine which Semipro teams will make the trip to Colorado and which Pro teams will face off in two weeks for the 5-game Conference Finals Series.
ISCA hosts this weekend’s games and while the expansion, Marple Gladiators and Scottsdale Inferno enjoy their byes into the second round, the defending champion Long Island Sting will need to overcome a very gritty New Jersey Braves squad. The other first round matchup will put the surprise Hershey Typhoon up against another expansion franchise, the Hatfield Scorchers. After the long regular season it has been proven that any of these teams can move on into the Conference Finals. “We are looking forward to a spectacular weekend of hockey. All these teams have been tight all season long and it will be interesting to see who will represent the east in Colorado,” commented league founder, Charley Yoder.
The Western Conference begins their trek to the Finals Sunday night January 26 as the division leading Parker Prowlers take on the Mile High Miners. This should be an interesting series as the Miners have had the Prowlers in a few early holes during games this year only to see the Prowlers come back to win. The second series puts two instant rivals against one another as the second seeded Colorado Springs Thunder take on the Colorado Stallions. The Stallions have played the Thunder tough every time and pulled out one win in their regular season games. Again out in the Rockies anyone has a chance at representing their conference at the Finals.
Although there are some favorites in both conferences, don’t be surprised to see some different names in Colorado Springs during the PIHA Finals.
