This past Saturday night the Eastern Conference started the league’s 2013-2014 playoffs and things did not go as planned for one team. This season, the league will award its 13th Founders Cup and it will not be presented to its defending champion Long Island Snipers. After an up and down season the Snipers were knocked off by the Scottdale Inferno who came into the playoffs as the Eastern Conference 2nd seed.
The young, talented Inferno were led by Matt Gerger, who added a late goal in a 4-2 Scottdale win and then was in on 4 of the 5 goals the team scored in the series clinching game 2 win (5-2). The Inferno will face the Marple Gladiators in two weeks in the Eastern Conference Finals.
Marple came into this weekend’s playoffs as the 1 seed and on a high after sweeping the Snipers during the last weekend of regular season play. The Gladiators showcased a total team effort as 8 guys scored at least a goal during the sweep of an overwhelmed Hatfield Scorchers. The Gladiator squad skated all over the Scorchers and walked away with a 7-2 win and a 6-3 victory. Both the Inferno and Gladiators will get back to work these next two weeks in preparation for the 5-game series to see who will head to Colorado and their chance at the Founders Cup.
