Colorado Springs, CO – The Marple Gladiators have won the 2013-2014 Founders Cup and they did it skating away from the competition. After an unbelievable Eastern Conference win the team from the Philly area made the trip to Colorado Springs, CO with a chip on their shoulder and a will to win.
Two nights of splits put Sunday in the limelight and a team needing to get two more wins to hoist the Founders Cup. Marple came out fired up and took an early 3-0 lead in Game 5 until Kyle Phelps scored late in the first to bring the Prowlers within two. The Prowlers fought back to even on goals by Craig Crow and Jeff Carlo but then Jim Devine scored his second of the contest to put the Gladiators up for good. Game 5 final score, 5-3.
Game 6 would not be close as the Gladiators scored early and often with AJ Ehinger scoring his third goal of the day just thirty seconds into period one. The top seeded Gladiators just kept piling on to skate to a 7-1 series clinching win. Everyone helped in Game 6 as six different players scored, Shane Fox had a three point night with a goal and two helpers.
All that was left was to hand over that Founders Cup and find out who would be Playoff MVP. AJ Ehinger skated away with it as he lit it up in Colorado adding 5 goals and 7 assists during the six games. “He’s a great kid and obviously has grown into a spectacular player. An absolute honor to hand AJ the MVP award. Congratulations kid,” commented league President, CJ Yoder.
“Overall the weekend was tremendous. Great games in the Semipro division, the Pro guys definitely put on a show, and every organization that attended did it with class and professionalism. The league is already looking forward to next season,” added Yoder.
