The Marple Gladiators and the Scottdale Inferno met a week ago at the home of the Inferno, HotShots Indoor Sports Arena in Mt. Pleasant, PA, for what looked to be a big weekend for all. While the Eastern Conference Finals were being played a large group of these rosters were also taking part in a college hockey weekend that would host 3 of the top teams in the country. So it was obvious these guys were in for a lot of hockey but no one would have projected what the Gladiators had to do to pull off one of the most spectacular series ever in PIHA.
On Saturday night games 1 and 2 both went the way of the home squad as the Inferno pulled out a close 3-2 win and then took it to the Gladiators 5-1 in game 2. Sunday would be a different story. After a long day of college hockey for most of the Gladiator team against the annual team to beat in the NCRHA, Lindenwood University, Marple had to suck it up and win three in a row to move on to the PIHA Finals, and suck it up they did! Game 3 was a 4-1 win and then the Gladiators went and forced a decisive game 5 with another close 3-2 win. In the deciding game the Glads would not be denied as they took the final game of the series 3-1 and sent home a disappointed and shocked Inferno crowd.
The Gladiators will face the Western Conference winner in a best-of-7 series at CETSports Arena in Colorado Springs, Colorado the last weekend in February to see who will claim the 2013-2014 Founders Cup.
